Transparency

Two nearly transparent materials — a velvety cedar-amber wood and an airy jasmine — make up more than half of the formula. Neither says much on its own; together they open a wide, clear space, and inside it each small amount of citrus, pepper, resin and musk among the 38 materials can be heard on its own.

Lifting the opening

How a bright top of grapefruit, lemon, orange and two peppers — the quickest materials to rise and fade — opens the formula, while longer-lasting grapefruit materials carry the citrus into the dry-down.

Working with dilutions

How three very strong materials — a sharp green fruit, a waxy, soap-clean note and an orange-blossom note — are each weighed as a one-in-ten solution made in the same airy jasmine material, so a tiny trace can be measured exactly.
