Accord

Citrus accord

A citrus accord gives the bright, zesty impression of lemon, bergamot, orange and grapefruit peel. It opens a perfume but fades first, so perfumers layer several materials and support them with longer-lasting ones.

How a Citrus accord is built

Perfumers rarely rely on one material. Terpenes give the juicy burst of pressed peel, aldehydes such as citral add the sharp lemon light, esters bring the soft, tea-like side of bergamot, and ketones supply the bitterness of grapefruit. Because all of these fade quickly, longer-lasting materials such as nitriles and clean musks are placed underneath to carry the impression further.
