Tying off the trail

Almost half of this formula is wood, yet after the citrus the first thing you notice is a violet powder. The largest material is a soft, velvety woody amber that adds glow rather than grain; with a creamy sandalwood, a dry cedar, a dark earthy wood note and a tobacco-like wood it forms a wide, low floor. A violet and orris material about half the size of that largest line sits on top, and because the woods are rounded rather than sharp, the powder stays in front — like violets on a sandalwood tray under a warm lamp.

Powdery softness

How a fine violet and orris powder is joined to a fresh rose, a warm hawthorn blossom and a faint clove, so it reads as a living flower and not as dust.

Working with dilutions

How three very strong materials — a warm seed spice, a grape-like orange blossom and a heady white-flower note — are weighed as one-tenth solutions in a clear, jasmine-like material, so each can be dosed precisely and blends smoothly.
