The largest single share of this formula is a bright, bittersweet citrus peel, close to one part in four. Yet what makes it read as a chypre is a much smaller dark share set against it: a cool forest moss over dry roots and warm resins. The top gives the light and the floor gives the shape; take the shade away and the brightness has nothing to stand on.

Reading regulations

How classic materials are kept within modern rules: the clove-like spice is weighed as a tenth-strength solution, the green herb is kept low for what it naturally carries, and the moss is used only in a cleaned grade, with half of it handed to a clean counterpart.

Bridge notes

How a soft, tea-like sage and a clear floral lift carry the citrus down into the flowers and the moss, so the fall from light to shade feels gentle rather than abrupt.
