Bridge notes

Citrus is the brightest part of any perfume and also the shortest-lived; on its own it is gone within minutes. Here almost a third of the formula is citrus, and right behind it stands one soft, floral, tea-like material that smells of both citrus and lavender. That material is the bridge: as the zest lifts away, it carries the same light into the herbal heart, so the cologne seems to stay bright for much longer without a heavy base — like lemons that keep glowing on indigo cloth after the morning mist has gone.

The power of traces

How very small touches — a pinch of anise, a spiced leaf, a blade of dried grass — are kept under one part in a hundred so they are felt as depth rather than named.

Reading regulations

Why the lemon and bergamot here are special grades with their light-sensitising compounds removed, and the lime is distilled instead of pressed — the usual way a citrus-rich cologne keeps those compounds low.
