Building an accord

Only part of the lavender you smell here comes from the natural oil. Its bright, fruity ester at the very same weight, a clear floral alcohol together with a softer relative that lingers longer, and two clean lifts with a hint of lime are set around it, so the herb reads larger and smoother than the oil could alone; together they make up about a seventh of the formula. Underneath, the two largest materials of all, a soft velvety wood and a dry violet powder, wait for it, and as the herb fades it simply steps down onto them, like a doorway opening onto a quiet room.

Powdery softness

Why the flowers stay dry and masculine: a big violet note with a dusty, woody side and a firm cedar with a touch of leather sit right under the rose and jasmine, so the heart feels warm and calm rather than sweet.

Working with dilutions

How the strongest small notes are handled: a spiced carnation, a living-flower note, a leathery green and a waxy sheen are each diluted to a tenth before weighing, so every drop can be measured and none of them can take over.
