Building an accord

The yellow, powdery blossom at the centre of this formula is almost entirely drawn, not extracted. The largest material is a heliotrope-like powder with an almond-and-vanilla sweetness, and three anise-sweet floral materials gather around it; together they make about a quarter of the whole, while the real mimosa is only a trace. Read the card as a drawing: the anise materials give the colour and the outline, the heliotrope note gives the softness, and the flower appears in the hush of an afternoon room, like a bowl of blossom seen through filtered light.

Powdery softness

How violet materials set just beneath a sweet powder, about a sixth of the formula with a touch of iris root, keep the powder from turning only sweet and give it a cool, velvet floor.

Reading regulations

How the strongest warm notes — a carnation-like spice cut down to a tenth-strength solution to stay within its limit, and a cumin note used the same way — give the flowers the warmth of skin without ever being heard on their own.
