The first and largest voice in this formula is a bitter, sparkling citrus peel, about a fifth of the batch. Under it lies a cool, damp moss with an earthy shadow, and that layer is surprisingly thin, only about a twentieth of the whole. A chypre lives on this pairing of light on top and shade beneath. The shade does not have to be loud; it only has to be there when the citrus fades, so the scent keeps its outline instead of simply vanishing.
