What you’ll learn from this formula

How a woody floral stays bright

clear, fruity-green woods carry the flowers instead of weighing them down

  • Main skill

    Transparency

A floral built on dark woods soon turns heavy. Here the woody side comes almost entirely from four clear wood materials that smell of pale timber, green fruit and apple skin; together they are the largest group after the flowers, while the deep, dense woods are only a small part. So the formula reads as wood without shadow, and the jasmine, lily of the valley and violet stay in the light — like rain-cooled boards on a morning veranda.

  • Supporting skill

    Powdery softness

How the violet works as a powder rather than a flower — two violet materials of different weight, one soft and powdery, one darker and woody, settle over the white flowers like fine dust.

  • Supporting skill

    The power of traces

How a handful of materials used in very small amounts — a cut leaf, a fig leaf, one cool breath of eucalyptus and two very strong, bright materials weighed as solutions — make the morning air feel wet and alive without becoming a theme of their own.

Description

Early morning on the veranda of a ryokan, just after rain: the polished boards still cool, a maple dripping in the misty garden, sweet violets and lily of the valley in a white porcelain bowl and a sprig of jasmine on black lacquer. It opens with bergamot, lemon, grapefruit and a clean lime, with a cool green leaf and a single breath of eucalyptus. Then the white flowers come forward — a warm jasmine petal, a dewy lily of the valley, a fresh rose and a green hyacinth — and the violet settles over them as a fine powder. Pale, green-fruity woods run underneath like freshly planed boards, and it dries down to a soft, powdery musk and a velvet wood. A study in keeping a woody floral bright, with clear woods instead of heavy ones.
