Umber Plinth Formula

Bridge notes

Between a wide lavender-and-bergamot opening and a heavy floor of cedar and earth, this formula places a bridge of air: a transparent, airy jasmine material, the second largest line, and a cool, dewy lily-of-the-valley material beside it. Neither is loud, yet together they hold close to a quarter of the batch, so the aromatic top does not fall straight onto the woods; the middle stays open and the cedar arrives through clean light.

Controlling sweetness

How a small touch of dry, hay-sweet material and a little vanilla, together less than three hundredths of the batch, turn the cedar and earth warm and dry in the drydown instead of austere.

Working with dilutions

How four strong materials, a clean amber, a warm animal musk, a fruity wood and a waxy mandarin peel, are weighed as one-tenth solutions in the transparent jasmine material, so each stays a single trace.
