Cleanliness

Close to a third of this formula is musk, five of them, led by a sweet, clean macrocyclic musk that is the largest single material. Above that floor sits a lemon cologne of almost the same size: peel oils with a sharp zest and a cool, lime-like freshness. The peel is spent within the hour; the musk, which barely smells at first, is what stays and decides that the drydown reads as clean and pale rather than warm.

Lifting the opening

How a transparent jasmine air of about a fifth of the batch fills the gap between the fast citrus and the slow musk, so the lemon fades into light rather than simply disappearing into a base.

Working with dilutions

How four very strong materials, two fruity rose notes, a cut-leaf green and a sharp green rose, are weighed as one-tenth solutions so that each stays a trace.
