Backbone and seasoning

Almost half of this formula is amber woods and musk — a dry amber wood, creamy sandalwoods, a tobacco-warm wood and, as the largest single line, a soft skin musk. On their own they would sit low and heavy. A bright band of citrus and lavender herbs, about half that weight, rises above them and is smelled first, while an airy jasmine material keeps the heart from closing in. The woods hold the shape; the herbs give it light, like the last glow of a low fire behind pale stone.

Lifting the opening

How the opening is lit — bergamot, lemon and a clean, lime-like freshness lift off first with crisp lavender herbs, and leave the warm woods behind.

The power of traces

How four very strong materials, each weighed neat as a tiny trace, give the opening its green snap and polished shine without being noticed on their own.
