Close to an eighth of this formula is apple, yet almost all of it is a single large material that smells of apple peel, dry and faintly woody — on its own it gives the fruit a shape, not a taste. Around it the formula sets a handful of far stronger materials that together weigh only a small fraction of the peel: a pair of juicy fruit esters, one sour acid, a pair of green-leaf esters and two rose-apple ketones. Each is almost nothing by weight, yet together they add the juice, the sourness and the snap, so the peel reads as an apple just bitten on a rain-washed terrace.

Why the clean, lime-like freshness and the sheer jasmine are kept so wide: they open space around the fruit, so each small trace can be heard.

How nine materials are weighed as solutions at three strengths — one-in-two, one-in-ten and one-in-a-hundred — so a soft musk pours easily and the strongest fruit ester lands as a single drop.
