Description

Evening in a quiet modern gallery: a single spotlight falls on a pale travertine plinth against a charcoal wall, where violets crowd a low glass bowl beside a few straight green leaves and half a nectarine rests on black ceramic. The first breath is sharp and green — a freshly split galbanum leaf, the sap of a cut stem, the skin of a green apple — with only a thin line of lemon and bergamot for light. Then the violet steps forward, dry and woody rather than sugary, held upright by a cool, herbal green wood as a stem holds its flower. Around it, a dewy lily of the valley, a soft rose and jasmine, and the ripe skin of nectarine and peach. It settles into smooth velvet wood and cedar, a faint powder of orange blossom and a clean musk. A study in keeping a violet cool and modern instead of powdery and sweet.
