Building an accord

There is no single amber material in this formula. Its warm finish comes from five modest materials working together — a dry, velvety wood, an earthy dark leaf oil, a creamy vanilla crystal, a milky sandalwood and a hay-like sweetness — which together make up only about one tenth of the batch. None is loud enough to be recognised on its own, so on the skin they merge into one soft glow beneath roughly three tenths of transparent jasmine and a tenth of clean musk.

Bringing it to life

Why the jasmine feels alive: beside the large, airy jasmine material, three tiny additions — a green, fruity jasmine note, a warm powdery floral and an indolic white-flower note, each far below one part in a thousand — give the sheer flower the warmth and shadow of a real bloom.

Working with dilutions

How five very strong materials are weighed as one-in-ten solutions in the jasmine material, and why the clean musk is used as sold, already diluted by half, so that every line of the batch can be measured on an ordinary balance.
