Tying off the trail

About a third of this formula is wood and earth: the largest single material is a smooth, velvety wood, the largest natural one is a dark, earthy patchouli leaf, and small touches of soft wood, amber, moss and root lie beneath them. Above this floor sits a fresh, lime-like cologne of about a quarter of the batch. The cologne lifts first and fades within minutes; the floor stays for hours and decides what is left on the skin.

Contrast

How a thin line of herbs, bitter wormwood, rosemary, mountain pine and a breath of mint, together less than one tenth of the batch, gives the cologne its character against the dark patchouli, while a clean musk keeps the drydown from turning heavy.

Working with dilutions

How five strong materials, a cut-green note, an earthy root, a dry moss, a peach skin and a living floral note, are weighed as one-tenth solutions, so each stays a trace.
