Bringing it to life

There is no mango material in this formula. Its mango comes from three plain terpenes — one pine-like, one peppery and one herbal, together less than a tenth of the formula — the same resinous molecules that scent a real mango skin. They sit over the largest material, a sweet, ripe nectarine, with a creamy coconut-milk note and quick fruity esters for the juice. On their own the terpenes smell of pine and pepper; set into ripe fruit and cream, they read as mango.

The power of traces

How a few very strong materials, made into dilutions and used in tiny amounts, add the fleshy, nutty ripeness and the cool, green bud note that make tropical fruit feel real.

Contrast

How a green, metallic, geranium-leaf material, one of the larger lines of the formula, keeps the juice and the caramel from turning sugary.
