Viking* Type Formula StudyLongship 17 · GA-021755

A first breath as cold as a dawn sea wind — lemon and orange peel, the chill of mint, a sharp bite of pepper. Then the warm spices of clove and lavender spread, and dry woods, vetiver and a clean musk stay long on the skin. A spicy aromatic woody that opens cold and lingers warm.

What you’ll learn from this formula

How a tiny amount makes a cold first breath

winter air between hot spices and broad woods

  • Main skill

    The power of traces

People remember this kind of scent for its cold first breath, yet the perfumer’s secret that opens that chill is only about a thousandth of the formula, and the materials that give the cool mint add up to only about a hundred-fiftieth. That tiny amount lays winter air over a citrus opening of about a seventh, so the whole scent reads cool. That is the lesson: a strong impression comes not from adding a lot, but from placing a very little in the right spot.

  • Supporting skill

    Setting the heart

How to wrap a warm heart in coolness: the spice and herb block is about a seventh of the formula, and within it the warm spices people remember so vividly are only about a fortieth of the formula. Lavender materials of about an eleventh of the formula surround them, so the heat stays inside a clear herbal grain instead of jumping forward.

  • Supporting skill

    Close to the skin

How broad woods make the contrast last: a little over a third of the formula is wood, and more than two thirds of that is one velvety woody material. Beside it, more than half of the amber and musk — about a quarter of the formula — is one clean musk material, so after the cold opening and the warm heart have passed, the drydown stays quietly and long close to the skin.

Description

The first breath opens with the bright light of bergamot, lemon and orange peel, but that light is cool rather than warm. Mint passes like a cold wind, pink pepper bites, and the bitter green of absinthe draws the brightness tight. Soon the warm spices of clove and allspice come forward, and lavender wraps around them clearly. Rose and iris never take the lead; they only glint coldly. In time the dry woods of vetiver and cedarwood, a soft tonka-like sweetness and a white musk remain close to the skin. Some people find the clove quite strong and remember this scent as a classic spicy fougère. It suits the cool seasons especially well. This is the impression our perfumer formed on smelling the reference fragrance, written in our own words. It is not a measurement and not the reference fragrance’s formula.
