What you’ll learn from this formula

How a trace can become the name of a scent

pineapple light over citrus, smoke and amber

  • Main skill

    The power of traces

People remember this kind of scent for its pineapple and dark berries, yet the whole fruit block is less than a hundredth of the material in this formula, and the pineapple itself comes from the perfumer’s secret, used at about one five-thousandth. The fruit can lead because of the stage built around it: a bitter-bright citrus opening fills about a third of the formula, with a single citrus peel alone close to a quarter, and it lifts the fruit forward, while the dry edge of spice and herbs keeps it from turning sweet. That is the lesson: a note that gives a scent its name does not need volume, only the right stage.

  • Supporting skill

    Backbone and seasoning

How smoke is drawn with a thread, not a fire: the smoky materials together are less than a thousandth of the formula. They ride on a dry, transparent wood material that makes up about seven tenths of the woody block, so the smoke reads as a passing shadow over the wood rather than a campfire. A little more, and the smoke steps in front of the fruit.

  • Supporting skill

    Holding the shape

How the same confidence outlasts the opening: once the citrus has gone, a broad floor of amber and clean musks, about a quarter of the formula, and an airy floral layer of a little more than a fifth, mostly one transparent jasmine material, hold the shape on the skin for a long time. The fruit and citrus fade, but the outline they drew stays.

Description

The first breath brings bergamot and lemon peel sparkling with bitterness, and between them the sweet-tart light of ripe pineapple, green apple and dark berries spreads out. The fruit never runs sweet: the dry edge of pepper and herbs holds that sweetness firmly in place. With time, a thin smoke like burnt birch, dry moss and earthy patchouli cast a shade over the woods, while an airy, transparent floral with glimpses of jasmine and rose passes lightly above them. At the end, salty amber and clean musk stay close to the skin for a long time. This is the impression our perfumer formed on smelling the reference fragrance, written in our own words. It is not a measurement and not the reference fragrance’s formula.
