A wood that opens on the dry warmth of cardamom and pepper. Through a transparent floral air to smooth cedar grain, a faint shadow of oud, and amber and musk that stay close to the skin.

What you’ll learn from this formula

How a trace can carry a name

oud drawn with a little, woods drawn with a lot

  • Main skill

    The power of traces

The material that gives this scent its oud character is used in only a very small amount. What makes the impression large is everything placed around it: woody materials fill close to half of the formula, and one smooth, cedar-like ambery wood on its own is close to a third. The trace supplies the dark, faraway shadow; the broad woods supply the size. That is the lesson: the note that names a scent can stay quiet when the frame around it is generous.

  • Supporting skill

    Backbone and seasoning

How a backbone is built: a single smooth ambery wood, used at close to a third of the formula, forms the body, and a handful of earthier, smokier and creamier woods are layered over it in much smaller amounts to add grain, so the wood reads as polished rather than flat.

  • Supporting skill

    Transparency

How transparency keeps weight from sinking: a sheer floral air of about a sixth of the formula and a dry spice-and-citrus opening of only about a thirtieth sit between the woods, giving them room to breathe instead of settling heavily.

Description

With the first breath, cardamom and pepper rise dry and warm, and finely planed wood takes their place almost at once. This is not a heavy, animal oud but the impression of wood that is smooth and composed, like well-polished furniture. As time passes, a dark shadow of oud settles very faintly, while a creamy sandalwood and dry, earthy roots hold it from below. At the end, a soft tonka-like sweetness, amber and clean musk stay close to the skin for a long time. This is the impression our perfumer formed on smelling the reference fragrance, written in our own words. It is not a measurement and not the reference fragrance’s formula.
