Neroli Portofino* Type Formula StudyBigarade Portofino 11 · GA-020119

A Mediterranean citrus cologne in which lemon and bitter-orange peel burst like a sea breeze. Across a herbal bridge of lavender, orange blossom opens white, and at the end a musk as clean as soap stays on the skin.

What you’ll learn from this formula

How to make citrus last

a Riviera cologne held up by a clean musk floor

  • Main skill

    Holding the shape

Citrus is the first thing to fly away, yet here its impression lingers. The bright opening is layered from seven different citrus peels and makes up about a fifth of the formula, while clean, soapy musks fill more than a third underneath. As the peels fade, that musk floor keeps the fresh, washed feeling on the skin for hours. That is the lesson: a fleeting top note lasts when something long-lasting is built beneath it to carry its memory.

  • Supporting skill

    Bridge notes

How a bridge joins two worlds: between the citrus and the white flowers sits a herbal, lavender-like block of about a fifth of the formula. Two closely related molecules make up about seven tenths of it, so the step from peel to flower feels like one smooth gesture rather than two separate scents.

  • Supporting skill

    The power of traces

How a trace turns molecules into a flower: the orange blossom is drawn mostly with single molecules and a transparent jasmine material. The perfumer’s secret, a natural flower oil, is less than a thirtieth of that block, yet it gives the blossom its green honey and bittersweet petals. Without it, the flower smells clean but soapy.

Description

At the first breath, freshly pressed lemon and bergamot burst out together with bitter-orange peel, carried on a clear, cool light like a salty sea breeze. Bright but never sharp — a rounded citrus, like fruit peel warmed by the sun. A moment later the cool texture of lavender and herbs carries the citrus over into flowers, and at the centre the white, bittersweet blossom of orange flower and neroli opens. At the end a clean musk with a hint of amber lingers, like skin just rinsed with soap. This is the impression our perfumer formed on smelling the reference fragrance, written in our own words. It is not a measurement and not the reference fragrance’s formula.
